Two Users. One Device

This quandry can be applied to pretty much any public bathroom-based scenario. You are one of 2 bathroom users. Both of you have stepped out of the toilets at exactly the same time.

This presents two questions:

  1. Which one of you goes first?
  2. If the other person goes first, what do you do in the mean-time?
The answer to question one is that it's every man for himself in there. (I use the term 'man' figuratively; I assume that women suffer from the same problem.)

The answer to question two is blatantly obvious. You stand there awkwardly, and wait for the other person to wash their hands hurriedly, aware you're stood behind them and waiting to use the same appliance.

This appliance is inter-changeable. It could be a sink. Following the sink scenario, it could be the hand-dryer.

The hand-dryer is a personal favourite of mine, because there's no way to dry your hands faster than the air that (in the most awkward instances of this problem, feels like an old person breathing heavily through a straw) is travelling toward your hand.

What can make this problem infinitely worse is if the hand-dryer is underperforming. It's either too soft on air production, or worse still, it's producing cold air.

The most favourable solution by most UK citizens in this situation is to simple wipe their hands on their trousers after 1.5 seconds under the hand-dryer, and to walk briskly away from the confrontation. This includes those who wear the sort of trousers that, when wet, will provide that familiar stain that you inevitably saw on a member of your class in infants school (The one after pre-school for the US) after they had noticed their parents leaving the classroom for the first time, and promptly wet themselves.

Here endeth another thought.
