Singular cinema visits

I'm not referring to the frequency of your visit; rather to the number in attendance at the showing.

Imagine this:

You're going to the cinema. There's a group of seven attending, and you're going straight there. In fact, you're all meeting eachother there after work. You all meet outside, and buy your tickets. Small-talk is exchanged in the foyer while you wait to be allocated a seat in the theatre. You sit down.

From now on, you do not talk to eachother for the next 2 hours unless it is to ask for popcorn.

"Fine" I hear you say.

And it is fine. Just one thing bothers me though.

Why if you do not talk to fellow attendees for large quantities of cinema time, is it frowned upon to turn up to the showing of a film on your own?

No friends, no family, just you.

Why do people instantly assume you must be a complete loner who's just about to go on a rampage, gouging out peoples' eyes with an empty M&Ms bag and a fizzy-drink straw?

What if your boyfriend or girlfriend doesn't want to see the film? What if none of your friends haven't expressed an interest? Should that mean that you can't turn up to the film on your own?
