Personalised number plates

Are they really worth it?
Who cares if you're driving down the street and somebody sees that your plate is:
1E74T.
It may very well mean something to you, and it may have cost you a fortune. We may even be aware that it cost you a fortune. However, the average person will not know what that is.
The one I saw that's in this article has some meaning to it, but it doesn't relate to the driver. If it's not an investment, then it's just somebody showing off with a plate that everybody recognises, but it doesn't personalise your personality whatsoever.
If you're going to waste your money on a personalised number plate, at least make it something that's actually personal to you and something that people are going to understand. Something like:
573V3.
If you look hard, it says Steve, and we know what it is. I know what it is. I'm what counts, because I'm (probably) the only person that's noticed enough to write about it.
